Health Rocks

About the Program:

Health Rocks!® is part of the 4-H healthy living programs for youth ages 8 to 14 from across the nation.  The goal of Health Rocks!® is to bring youth, families, and communities together to reduce teen tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use. Health Rocks!® involves hands-on education to reduce youth substance abuse by teaching valuable life skills such as: decision-making, critical thinking, communication, managing feelings, stress management, and goal setting. The program utilizes adult volunteers and youth program staff, preferably working with youth partners, to teach about accurate health information regarding norms and consequences of youth substance usage. Health Rocks! ® is easy to use, incorporates interactive hands-on learning, and meets National  Health Education Standards as well as Sunshine State Standards in Florida in the middle school grades.

Health Rocks! is a healthy living program designed to:

  • Reduce youth smoking and tobacco use
  • Help youth build life skills that lead to healthy lifestyle choices with special emphasis on youth smoking and tobacco use prevention
  • Help youth understand influences and health consequences of tobacco, alcohol, and drug use to make healthy choices
  • Engage youth and adults in partnerships to develop and implement community strategies that promote healthy lifestyle choices
  • Build positive, enduring relationships, with youth involved as full partners, through widely varying “communities of interest” to address risk behaviors of youth

“Now let me tell you something! 4-H has changed my life incredibly. You may think I’m over exaggerating, but let me tell you why. These 11 years of learning leadership skills and how to deal with stress has paid off. I have learned skills such as healthy life choices, self responsibility, and self motivation that help me cope with stress and being able to talk to someone about it. When I’m in doubt, or I need someone to talk to, I go to my 4-H leader who is also my mother and my 4-H advisor, Mrs. Sarah. Just the smile on their faces and the knowledge that they gained form 4-H through out the years reassures me that everything will be ok. I have learned many things, but 4-H has taught me one of the main lessons in life. Life is hard and stress will always be a factor in it if you like it or not, but you are able to control it and take charge of your life.”
