General Animal Sciences (Group Projects)

In the 4-H General Animal Science Group Projects, you will learn:

  • best practices for animal care and management;
  • safe and ethical practices for animal welfare;
  • how to promote the use of animal products and industry; and
  • skills such as decision-making, getting along with others, self-responsibility, planning and organizing, and improving your knowledge of general science and technology.

GENERAL ANIMAL SCIENCE SERIES
(For Youth Ages 5-10)

All About Animals (Ages 5-7)

In this project you will explore the basics of animal science. You will begin to learn about the essential components of caring
for animals, with a focus on companion animals. The topics include: what an animal is, how animals serve humans, the care, health, nutrition, welfare, and understanding of production animals and animals in the environment. Produced by Florida

World of Animals (Ages 8-10)

This curriculum is designed to give you a complete look at the world of animals around you. It is based on experience and
teaches life skills through emphasizing proper care and humane treatment of all animals. Topics include: what an animal is, animal care, animal nutrition, harvesting animals, how animals serve humans, animal health, animal welfare, marketing and economics, and how animals affect the environment. EXPLORING FARM ANIMALS
(For Youth Ages 5-7)

Learn about farm animals by getting involved in hands on activities! This project covers horses, goats, rabbits, pets, beef
cattle, pigs, poultry and dairy cattle. You will identify species, products, terms, and animal body parts, and learn how to care for and feed farm animals. You will also gain knowledge on how to work with animals safely. Several worksheets and games are included. Available through National 4-H Council.

EXPLORE THE WORLD OF
SMALL ANIMALS
(For Youth Ages 5-7)

Shares the health, nutrition, and care of small animals for you
to better understand them and their unique needs. This project
is divided into three areas: Health, Nutrition, and Care. Each
lesson plan includes an opening, hands-on activities, discussion questions, games, songs, books, and a parent newsletter, as well as an evaluation. Produced by Washington State 4-H.
