Embryology Project

In the 4-H Embryology projects, you will learn:

  • best practices for animal care and management;
  • safe and ethical practices for animal welfare;
  • how to promote the use of poultry products and the poultry industry; and
  • skills such as decision-making, getting along with others, self-responsibility, planning and organizing, and improving your knowledge of general science and technology.

Individual Project Materials (For Youth Ages 8-18) 

This project manual introduces you to details about the design and use of incubators, how to hatch eggs, and the life of the egg. EMBRYOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM

  • Hatching: Classroom Projects allows 4-H'ers (ages 7-11) to learn both life and science skills as they study embryology topics like incubation, preparing a brooder, handling chicks, and careers in the poultry industry.  Available through National 4-H Council.
  • Experiments in Poultry Science allows 4-H'ers (ages 12-14) to learn both life and science skills as they study embryology topics including hatching, identifying parts of an egg, collecting data and details about embryos and chicks. Available through National 4-H Council.

This informative book is for grades 5 - adult and is for both beginning and experienced chicken owners covers selecting a breed, taking care of chicks, eggs for eating, raising broilers, feeding and troubleshooting. Live drawings and photos. Available at National 4-H Council.

Your Chickens - A Kid's Guide to Raising and Showing
A children's reference book for grades 3-12 is written in easy to understand language that features information on selection, housing, feeding, health, behavior, and showing. A great resource for 4-H leaders, teachers, and first time animal owners. Available at the National 4-H Council.

This poster, which complements the Embryology in the Classroom Curriculum, shows the development of a chick from Day 3 - Day 19. Available at the National 4-H Council.

Poultry Learning Lab Kit - Ohio State University
This kit is developed for grades 4-12 and includes units on anatomy, breeds, meat & eggs, quality assurance, equipment & facility management and selection & evaluation. These popular kits provide the basis for interactive learning experiences. Kit components include posters, labels, statements, demonstration items, and charts. All posters, charts, prints and situation/task statements are laminated for increased durability with answer keys on the reverse side.
