General Food Preparation Project
In the 4-H General Food Preparation projects, you will learn:
- how to use knowledge, skills, and better practices relating to personal health and safety;
- how to increase positive activities that promote physical health and well-being; and
- skills such as decision-making, getting along with others, planning and organizing, and responsibility.
Project Materials - FOOD PREPARATION - GENERAL (For Youth Ages 8-18)
These popular 4-H activity guides answer questions like: “What’s the best way to freeze cookies?” and “How can I make a recipe more nutritious?” Each guide includes 24 exciting activities in six major categories: healthy food selection, food safety, smart purchasing, preservation, preparation and careers. The helper’s guides provide ideas, activities and reference tables, as well as solutions to questions posed in the manuals.

FOOD PREPARATION - Level 1 (Ages 8-10)
- Six Easy Bites teaches 4-Hers about the food pyramid, making breakfasts, starches, calcium, sugar in foods, reading food labels, comparing costs, microwaving, food safety, food storage, food spoilage, freezing, and identifying careers in the food industry. Available through National 4-H Council.
FOOD PREPARATION - Level 2 (Ages 11-13)
- Tasty Tidbits teaches 4-Hers about the different drinks, preparing different types of food, altering fat content in foods, comparing costs of quantity and brand name foods, storing food, and the role of a food scientist. Available through National 4-H Council.
FOOD PREPARATION - Level 3 (Ages 14-18)
- You're the Chef teaches 4-Hers about evaluating media nutrition information, fad diets, eating and emotions, how to cook less tender cuts of meat, preparing foods, preservatives, stabilizers, food additives, canning, and measuring acidity in foods. Available through National 4-H Council.
- Foodworks teaches 4-Hers how to conduct a food preparation activity for younger children, pregnancy and infant food requirements, vegetarian diets, older adults nutritional needs, eating out, recycling, planning menus, how to cook for one, international foods, dividing recipes, food safety, and food preservation. Available through National 4-H Council.
Leader/Helper Guide
This Helper's Guide will help you support youth in his or her efforts to set goals and complete activities, as well as providing resources for the member's to use in completing the series. Available through National 4-H Council.
