Gardening Projects

In the 4-H Gardening projects, you will learn:

  • how to develop marketable and productive skills for work and
    family life in science and technology;
  • how to effectively communicate with others;
  • to develop and maintain positive relationships with others;
  • to demonstrate knowledge/skills or improved practices for personal safety; and
  • skills such as decision-making, getting along with others, planning and organizing, and responsibility.

(For Youth Ages 8-18)

Do you like to work outdoors and get your hands dirty? Four grade-level activity guides include exciting activities in categories such as: planning, planting, care, maintenance,
harvesting and careers. The helper’s guide offers activities, ideas, and content to help leaders with their challenging role.

GENERAL - Level 1 (Ages 8-10)

  • See Them Sprout teaches 4-Hers about planning, planting, seed germination, the different plant parts, gardening tools, harvesting vegetables, identifying vegetable products, and greenhouses.  Available through National 4-H Council.

GENERAL - Level 2 (Ages 11-13)

  • Let's Get Growing teaches 4-Hers about transplants, crop rotation,  plant responses, growing plants from plant parts, a worm box, feeding plants, judging vegetables, storing vegetables, selling your vegetables, and careers in horticulture. Available through National 4-H Council.

GENERAL - Level 3 (Ages 14-18)

  • Take Your Pick teaches 4-Hers about improving soil, succession planting, growing herbs, broadcast planting, pH levels, photosynthesis, cross-pollinating, insect damage, teaching, irrigation, record keeping, food preservation, and horticulture careers. Available through National 4-H Council.
  • Growing Profits teaches 4-Hers about intercropping, a doublecrop, using a computer to plan, pollution, hydroponics, biotechnology, plant diseases, fertilizers/nutrient deficiencies, pesticides, and keeping financial records. Available through National 4-H Council.

Leader/Helper Guide

The Helper's Guide will help you support youth in his or her efforts to set goals and complete activities, as well as providing resources for the member's to use in completing the series. See column on the right to print lessons. Available through National 4-H Council.

 

Project Materials-GARDENING: SPECIAL TOPICS (For Youth Ages 8-13)

This series focuses on planning a garden and exploring the different seasons for each different fruits and vegetables. This project book gives you a way to learn about how to plan a garden, what is needed for garden maintenance, and how to maintain the newly planted garden.

SPECIAL TOPICS - Level 1 and Level 2 (Ages 8-13)

  • Vegetable Gardening teaches 4-Hers about how to plan a garden, what is needed for garden maintenance, and how to maintain the newly planted garden.
  • Container Gardening teaches 4-Hers about three ways to grow vegetables in a small area.  In EDIS this publication is DLN 4H 223.

Make plantable greeting cards... discover the wonderful world of worms... use peanut butter, chocolate chips, and cereal to learn about soil aggregates...find out how plants clean water...create your own ethnic vegetable garden...and more.  Students can become a certified Junior Master Gardener by completing all eight subjects in Unit 1.

JMG- Level 1 (Ages 8-10)

  • Jr. Master Gardener 1 Helper's Guide provides teachers with the resources to teach students about the wonderful world of gardening. There are eight chapters with hands-on, novel learning experiences for youth. Available through National

JMG - Level 2 (Ages 11-13)

  • Operation Thistle combines the teacher/leader guide with reproducible pages for young participants. Through dozens of exciting and fun activities, students can investigate plant growth and development, take part in service learning projects, and earn certification--all while undertaking an urgent mission to defeat Dr. Thistle! Available through Texas Extension.
  • Operation W.A.T.E.R. continues the saga of the evil Dr. Thistle and his plot to rule the earth's ecosystems. Topics in this book include soil color, texture and structure; soil nutrients; soil improvement; soil conservation; the water cycle; aquifers, watersheds and wetlands; water movement; and water conservation. Also included is a section on service learning and career exploration projects connected to soil and water. Available through Texas Extension.
