Plant Science Project

In the 4-H Plant Science projects, you will learn:

  • how to develop marketable and productive skills for work and
    family life in science and technology;
  • how to effectively communicate with others;
  • to develop and maintain positive relationships with others;
  • to demonstrate knowledge/skills or improved practices for personal safety; and
  • skills such as decision-making, getting along with others, planning and organizing, and responsibility.

Project Materials - PLANT SCIENCE
(For Youth Ages 8-18)

This curriculum provides activities in basic plant science, composting, flower arranging and indoor and outdoor gardening. While developing skills in horticulture, youth will be
practicing valuable life skills such as communication, decision making and problem solving. There are even opportunities for
leadership and community service through horticulture.

PLANT SCIENCE - Level 1 (Ages 8-10)

  • Budding Gardeners teaches 4-Hers how to identify flowers parts and their functions, plant flowers, make a flower arrangement, give a presentation on flowers, prepare a flower exhibit for show, and much more. Contact your local

PLANT SCIENCE - Level 2 (Ages 11-13)

  • Branching Out teaches 4-Hers about plant needs and soil testing, select and start new plants, grow transplants, examine plants for insect damage, make a mass flower arrangement, keep records, judge a flowers exhibit. Contact your local 4-H County office for information on this project.

PLANT SCIENCE - Level 3 (Ages 14-18)

  • Digging Deeper lets 4-Hers explore the horticulture business, designing a plant experiment, making a site analysis and landscape plan, as well as teaching others how to make a line-mass flower arrangement. Contact your local 4-H County office for information on this project.

The Leader's Guide will help you support youth in his or her efforts to set goals and complete activities, as well as providing resources for the member's to use in completing the series.
