Poultry Project

In the 4-H Poultry projects, you will learn:

  • how to identify breeds and select quality poultry animals;
  • best practices for animal care and management;
  • safe and ethical practices for animal welfare;
  • showing skills;
  • how to promote the use of poultry products and the poultry industry; and
  • skills such as decision-making, getting along with others, self-responsibility, planning and organizing, and improving your knowledge of general science and technology.

Project Materials (For Youth Ages 8-18)

In this series you will develop the skills necessary to care for poultry. You will participate in activities such as breed identification, preparing poultry for show, exploring an egg, poultry health and judging market poultry value.

POULTRY Level 1

  • Scratching the Surface explores how to identify and select different species and breeds. You will learn the parts of poultry animals including eggs and feather features as well as feeding, handling, washing and showing techniques. Available through National 4-H Council.

POULTRY Level 2

  • Testing Your Wings explores how to recognize sickness early, identify parts and functions of a bird, how an egg is formed. 4-H'ers are also taught about judging, pecking order, selecting hens, feed tags, advertising poultry products, and preventing poultry diseases. Available through National 4-H Council.

POULTRY Level 3

  • Flocking Together guides older 4-H'ers in taking leadership roles, managing a laying flock, genetics, safe handling of meat and eggs, processing meat, poultry careers, and preparing for the work place. Available through National 4-H Council.

POULTRY Leader/Helper Guide

This Helper's Guide will help you support youth in his or her efforts to set goals and complete activities, as well as providing resources for the member's to use in completing the series. Available through National 4-H Council.

A Guide to Raising Chickens 
This informative book is for grades 5 - adult and is for both beginning and experienced chicken owners covers selecting a breed, taking care of chicks, eggs for eating, raising broilers, feeding and troubleshooting. Live drawings and photos. Available at National 4-H Council.

Your Chickens - A Kid's Guide to Raising and Showing
A children's reference book for grades 3-12 is written in easy to understand language that features information on selection, housing, feeding, health, behavior, and showing. A great resource for 4-H leaders, teachers, and first time animal owners. Available at the National 4-H Council.

Poultry Learning Lab Kit - Ohio State University
This kit is developed for grades 4-12 and includes units on anatomy, breeds, meat & eggs, quality assurance, equipment & facility management and selection & evaluation. These popular kits provide the basis for interactive learning experiences. Kit components include posters, labels, statements, demonstration items, and charts. All posters, charts, prints and situation/task statements are laminated for increased durability with answer keys on the reverse side. Kit includes Velcro to adhere to identification tags, and zipper pouches for tag storage. Each kit is packaged in a durable canvas carrying case for easy use, storage and transportation. Item 4043K.

Poultry Learning Lab CD-ROM - Ohio State University
Based on the learning lab kit, this CD-ROM will provide you with interactive quiz exercises for study of: anatomy, breed identification, meat science, egg quality, quality assurance, equipment & facility management, and selection & evaluation.
