A New look for the 2013 Volunteer Forum
This year’s 4-H Volunteer Forum combined the traditions of the past together with some new ideas. To start, the venue was moved from Camp Ocala to the Hilton Ocala. The Hilton provided a professional environment to learn as-well-as a place for everyone to kick back, relax and meet new friends. Another new change this year was that the Forum started on Friday afternoon at 4 pm and ended at 4:30 on Saturday. This gave everyone the opportunity to spend Sunday with their families. One would think that shortening the event would reduce the learning opportunities for participants. Actually, nothing could be further from the truth. This year fourteen workshops were offered by 4-H faculty, staff and volunteers. Participants learned about social media, Xtreme Cuisines, working with children, being safe and having fun and many, many other topics. Workshops were not the only highlight; the Hilton provided a wonderful menu for all of the meals including a terrific BBQ on the pool deck Friday night.
Not everything changed however. Thanks to the support of our 4-H Program Leader Dr. Keith Diem, State Volunteer Specialist Dr. Bryan Terry, Monsanto, Hilton Hotels, and the Volunteer Association, the registration fee remained $75 including overnight accommodations at the Hilton! The Volunteer Association held its annual business meeting and election of officers. Congratulations to all of the newly elected officers including Mario Martinez (Osceola County) who was elected as President and Lou Grayford (Lake County) who was elected President Elect. I want to take this moment to thank Nancy Jo Davidson (Lake County) for her service as President of the Volunteer Association for the past two years. The event culminated with a drawing for two Ipad Minis, trips to the Southern Region Volunteer Forum and several gift cards. Based upon the evaluations that we received, everyone learned something and had a good time. If you did not attend this year, make plans to join us next year.
